With the right tools and methodology, you can successfully tackle the job yourself. Difficulty rating: beginner to intermediate Time to allow: two hours Tools/ materials needed: 80 grit aluminium oxide paper, methylated spirit, P40 bridging compound, P38 body filler, 120-240 grit wet and dry paper, sanding block, two clean cloths useful links How to spray paint bodywork More how to guides 1) You need to work in a dry environment so if you're outside, check the weather forecast before beginning. Ensure that all tools and materials are clean. Remove the paint from the damaged area, adding a 1'' diameter all around, with 80 grit aluminium oxide paper. 2) Roughen the bare metal with the aluminium oxide paper or wire brush. Wipe away loose paint flecks. Apply methylated spirit to the area with a clean cloth and remove with a second cloth to ensure there's no wax or grease around the repair. Use a circular motion. 3) Any hole in the bodywork must now be bridged with P40 bridging compound. Mix the compound and hardener in the proportions given in the instructions (usually about 97 parts compond to 3 hardener) on a clean surface (not cardboard) for one to two minutes, until it's a uniform colour. Apply the mix to the hole with an applicator and allow it to harden for at least 30 minutes. 4) Mix the P38 body filler with hardener, again on a clean surface (not cardboard) and in the proportions stated. Use a folding action to eliminate air bubbles, which might cause 'pin holes' in the repair. Apply directly over the P40 and leave for 30 minutes. The paste should stand slightly proud of the level required. If you need to add a second layer, allow the first layer to harden before applying. 5) Using a sanding block and 120-240 grit wet and dry paper, sand to a nice smooth finish ready for painting.
